The Million Dollar Quartet: A Night of Rock and Roll History One Night in Memphis honors a pivotal moment in rock and roll history. On December 4, 1956, Carl Perkins, along with his brothers Clayton and Jay, booked a recording session at Sam Phillips' Sun Records studio in Memphis, Tennessee. They planned to record an old blues song called "Matchbox," later covered by the Beatles. Joining Carl was one of Sam Phillips' newest acquisitions, a young and confident piano player from Ferriday, Louisiana, named Jerry Lee Lewis. During the session, Elvis Presley, already a star, dropped by and listened in. Soon after, Johnny Cash arrived as well. An impromptu jam session ensued, with engineer Jack Clement unknowingly capturing the entire event on tape. The jam session lasted for quite some time. At one point, Sam Phillips called the Memphis Press-Scimitar newspaper, who sent a photographer to document the historic event. The following day, an article appeared under the headline "Million Dollar Quartet," chronicling this unforgettable occasion. What survives today is a recording of this momentous event – an incredible glimpse into American music history featuring icons in their prime: Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash, all having a blast singing country, gospel, and rock and roll together. This recording offers a fascinating glimpse of rock and roll in its infancy, highlighting the shared influences of these legends – their Southern roots and gospel backgrounds. But it also captures a camaraderie between major music stars, a rarity in today's industry. Don't miss your chance to experience this tribute to a legendary night in music history!
